Knock Shrine. Co. Mayo sees
some 1.5 million people visit every year. The story of Knock
began on 21st August 1879 when Our Lady, St. Joseph and St.
John the Evangelist, an altar with a cross and a lamb with
adoring angels appeared at the south gable of Knock Parish
Church. The apparition was witnessed by fifteen people, young
and old. The apparition at Knock was silent. No voice was
heard, no message was spoken. The apparition was enough.
We live in a world of mass communication and
noise. Today, it is possible to communicate by e-mail, text
message, fax, and video conferencing. We
have satellite television and radio beamed across the world
and yet we can spent our life surrounded by technology and
never take the time to experience the joy of silence.
It is only in the moments of silence that
we can contemplate God at work in our World. Like Jesus take
time away, up the hill, across the lake, retreat. In the silence,
let God enter your life.
